Mc Dougall - Born to run

The author asks the question of why we experience pain when running, especially when compared to some native populations who can run barefoot for incredible distances. In order to learn more, he sets out to meet the Tarahumara, a group known for their running skills. The book follows the author's journey to meet the Tarahumara, which leads him to Caballo Blanco and to the race he's planning.

The main story guides us from the beginning to the end of the book, while also introducing other interesting subplots such as long distance races, the history of running gear and the history of some long distance runners.

One interesting point made in the book is that modern running gear may actually be harmful to runners. The added shock absorption in shoes can change our stride and prevent the natural ability of the foot to do the stabilization and absorption work. There is no evidence to suggest that running with modern shoes is any more beneficial than running barefoot.

Another fascinating topic is the hypothesis of human evolution. Humans are well-equipped for running long distances compared to other animals with our ability to control our temperature through sweating and our ability to breath independently of our stride. This may have played a role in our evolution as we were able to hunt animals by outrunning them until they were exhausted.

Overall, this book was a pleasure to read and was very interesting. Every time I read it, it sparked a desire to go for a run and try barefoot or five-finger shoes.
